Cleaning

For all pieces I recommend using a polishing cloth suited to the precious metal of your jewellery piece. You can purchase plain ones or ones with compound in them. These are perfect for lifting any tarnish and making your piece sparkle.

DO NOT use any abrasive cleaners, liquid cleaners or home remedies. Using these may feel like a short cut however they will cause permanent damage to the metal. Resulting in tarnishing quicker, darkening the metal & causing permanent damage.

You can also take your jewellery to a local professional jeweller to have it cleaned or seek advice.

Protect

Tarnishing can be caused by my many things and is a natural reaction with precious metals. This is when your jewellery begins to darken in colour and appear to have lost its shine.

  • Water - Always remove your jewellery when submerging into water. This can include swimming, washing your hands & showering. Chemicals in water or from products can react with the surface of your jewellery. Always clean & dry your skin before popping your jewellery back on as even a tiny bit of moisture can affect it.

  • Body reaction – Due to individual body temperatures or chemical build up some precious metals can react with your skin causing your jewellery to tarnish quicker. It can cause discolouring to your skin but will easily be washed away.

  • Products & Perfumes – One of the biggest causes of tarnish is when jewellery comes into contact with perfume or lotions. Please always apply perfumes or lotions before wearing your jewellery & allow time for it to dry. Ideally avoid areas you will be wearing your jewellery.

  • Storage – It is best to keep your jewellery in its box as oxygen reacts with precious metals causing it to tarnish over time. The less light it is exposed to the better when not being worn. You can buy anti-tarnish storage solutions if this is a concern for you. Wearing your jewellery helps to keep it shining, so always wear your sparkle!

There are many other causes, but these are the most frequent. If you take care of your jewellery, it will last a lifetime & beyond!

Gemstones

Gemstones are individual & unique, just like us & so is caring for them. They are graded for there hardness on the MOH’s scale which rates them between 1-10, one being the softest. I will include this on my product descriptions where necessary.

As an overview I would avoid cleaning any gemstones or submerging them in any liquids. Use a polishing cloth but avoid the surface of the gemstone.

If really necessary you can clean them with water and a soft toothbrush but DO NOT do this with any porous gemstones. For example Pearls, Opals, Amber Emeralds, Coral or Onyx. The surface of these gemstones has small pores which will allow any liquid to effect & permanently damage the stone.
